Biography

Could it be conceivable that the next-up, very best breaker on the planet could also be one of its greatest soul warriors, too?

Everything about Icey Ives seems to suggest that is the case.

A breaker since his pre-teen years, Ives’ unique approach to dance is reflective of his outlook on life itself:

Dedication, appreciation, organization, leadership, and a record of remarkable commitment to community building.

Make no mistake though, once the beat drops and the battle commences, Ives feeds his competitive drive with the ferocity of a warrior and there are no prisoners.

A highly balanced blend of flow, style, power and creativity (all locked into the beat), Ives’ dancing is unquestionably uniquely “Ives-esque” to both the trained and untrained eye.

All of the above isn’t quite enough to achieve dozens of storied, national and global 1st place accolades. Minus a substantial hunger, the spirit cannot thrive. Results may be hollow or even absent all-together.

So what drives Ives’ hunger, and is it related to his formative and current residency in Anchorage, Alaska? Anchorage, the place where snow covers the ground 5 months / year and breakers haven’t traditionally been top of mind?

“It has always been important to me to put Alaska on the map in the breaking world, and that’s a big part of my drive to become World Champion,” says Ives with conviction, adding, “I have so much gratitude to Kareem and the Rock Force Crew that formed in San Francisco back in the 80s and welcomed me much later. No doubt they helped me develop into who I am today.”

In more recent years, Rock Force traveled to one of the best known breaking hubs in history: Los Angeles. The purpose of the trip: one of the most famous battles on earth known as “Freestyle Session.” The outcome: Champions.

Freestyle Session is a renowned crew battle. So what about in 1v1 competition?

A three-time Red Bull BC One USA Champion (2018, 2019, 2024) and Runner-Up at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ives is the 1st Filipino American to accomplish these massive feats – a fact he warmly acknowledges:

“Coming from an immigrant family and understanding the sacrifices my parents made to keep our family together and establish us as U.S. citizens, I think about that every day. It fuels my dance and is a big part of why I do what I do.”

Onward. Upward. Always purposefully.

Only time will tell where Ives’ journey will ultimately bring the young man.

However, what is becoming abundantly clear is that there is another attribute to add to his mix, be that intended or not:

Dedication, appreciation, organization, leadership, community. And Recognition.
