Biography
Some athletes grow up chasing finish lines. Max Jolliffe grew up chasing swells. A Costa Mesa, California native, Max spent his early years surfing, skating, and living the quintessential Southern California outdoor lifestyle. Running wasn’t the plan. In fact, it wasn’t even on the radar. But sometimes the best chapters of our stories – even those of elite athletes – begin by accident.
Years’ ago, while recovering from a heavy ankle injury, Max laced up his first pair of running shoes with the simple goal of getting back in shape. A couple of painful, humbling miles then turned into a few more. In the days after, the pace got quicker, distances grew, and somewhere along those early jogs, he found something deeper: A sense of calm, clarity, and raw joy that running unlocked in his psyche almost instantly. What started as rehabilitation rapidly evolved into a ritual, and then a passion, and eventually a calling.
Today, that late-blooming discovery has transformed Max into one of the most intriguing rising figures in ultrarunning. And while the term “unicorn” appears to be maxed out in TED talks and college graduate marketing courses, that’s exactly what Max is. Max Jolliffe is a unicorn in the ultrarunning world because he’s not only dominated events like the Moab 240 and other 100-mile races with a unique, culture-rich style, but he’s also bridged trail running with surf, skate, and creative communities, making him a pioneer who embodies the sport’s lifestyle rather than just racing it. For all the style, culture, and crossover appeal, the core of Max’s success is far simpler — and far harder.
“I think Max's greatest aspect to his racing is the fact that he doesn't quit." - Jess Haynes (2023 King of Moab Winner)
Each race tells a story, but Moab 240 forever changed his trajectory. The 240 mile race was captured on film that would go on to earn nearly a million views and solidified Max’s reputation as a relentless runner and the King of Moab.
Despite his rise, Max remains grounded, humble, and deeply Californian. When he’s not logging miles, he’s surfing, cycling, hanging at the beach, or spending time with his fiancée Mackenzie Ross and their dogs.
Max Jolliffe is proof that greatness doesn’t need an early start – just curiosity, consistency, and a whole lot of heart. With a unique blend of surf soul, mountain grit, and a mindset forged through miles, he’s quickly becoming one of the most compelling athletes in endurance sport, and the story is only getting started.
